The gentle charm of ordinary life comes from the sense of ritual brought by a PVC coaster.

Love-shaped coasters

Previously, I never really paid much attention to coasters. Before I started living alone, my parents took care of the housekeeping. How could I be bothered with such things? I would just casually put down my drinking cup, wipe the messy tabletop, and life went on like that.

It wasn’t until I moved out to live on my own last year that I found problems cropping up one after another. My desk is a panel – type furniture in a deep walnut color. It looks quite textured, but in fact, it’s extremely “delicate”. In summer, when I take out an iced cola from the fridge, the cup wall is instantly covered with water droplets. In no time, a white ring spreads on the tabletop. In winter, when I make a cup of hot tea, the bottom of the cup is a bit hot. If left there for a while, an obvious ring will appear. The worst time was when I accidentally knocked over half a cup of Americano. That part of the tabletop changed color directly and wouldn’t go back to normal no matter how I wiped it. It was really annoying. At that time, I thought it was too exaggerated to change the table just for such a thing.

So I started to think about buying coasters. I first got into fabric coasters. They are really good at absorbing water, but they get dirty very easily. Once stained with coffee or tea, they turn yellow and gray in just a few days. I’m afraid of soiling other clothes if I put them in the washing machine, and I find hand – washing troublesome. Moreover, I have to wait for them to dry after washing. For a lazy person like me, it’s simply torture. Later, I switched to wooden coasters. They look warm and textured, but they are even more delicate. If there is a little moisture that isn’t dried in time, the edges start to turn black and get moldy. I thought to myself that it seemed I was serving the coasters rather than using them.

Later, I randomly picked up two PVC soft – rubber coasters at a stationery store. Unexpectedly, this was the right choice.

First of all, it’s truly worry – free. This thing is completely waterproof. It was extremely hot in Beijing a while ago. I relied on iced lemon water every day to get through. The cup wall was full of condensation. In the past, the table would definitely get wet, but now all the water droplets stay on the coaster. After I finish drinking, I just rinse it off, and the tabletop remains dry. I can also put hot cups on it. I can directly place a cup of just – boiled water on it. The coaster doesn’t deform, and the tabletop remains intact.

What satisfies me most is that it’s so easy to clean. In the past, I had to scrub the cloth coaster for a long time when it got dirty, but this one doesn’t require that at all. I keep it beside my computer desk. When coffee is accidentally spilled, I just take a wet tissue and wipe it clean, even saving the step of washing it. Sometimes when I think it’s dirty, I just rinse it under the faucet, shake it a couple of times, and it can be used again. I don’t have to worry about mold or wait for it to dry. For someone who just wants to flop down after work every day, something that doesn’t cause trouble is truly something that can be used for a long time.

There is also a detail that I find particularly useful – anti – slip. In the past, when using coasters with a smooth surface, the cup would slide around when placed on them. It was easy for the cup to tip over when my elbow touched it. Once, I spilled a cup of hot tea on my keyboard like this, and my heart sank. After switching to this soft – rubber coaster, the friction between the cup bottom and the coaster is just right. The cup stays stable when placed on it. Even if it’s accidentally touched, it just moves a bit and doesn’t tip over. For someone as clumsy as me when working, this is extremely important.

After using it for a few months, I found that it’s not only practical but also looks nice when placed there. I chose a coaster with a creamy – yellow check pattern. Placed on the dark – colored tabletop, it’s not ostentatious, but it makes that small area look lively. When I make a cup of tea or put a glass of juice, looking at the clean patterns on the coaster, I inexplicably feel at ease. I can’t really say why. Maybe this is what is called a “sense of life” – it’s not precious or forced, but I can see it every day. Over time, it becomes a habitual source of comfort.

Later, I bought a few more to use in rotation. I use cool blue – green ones in summer and warm – colored ones in winter. When my friends came to my place and saw them, they even asked me for the link, saying that such small things are suitable for any occasion and would also look good in the office.

After all, what really makes people feel comfortable in life never seems to be any grand gestures. Changing the table or furniture is too costly and troublesome. Instead, spending just a few dollars to add such a small thing between the cup and the tabletop quietly blocks out those trivial annoyances. Every day when I drink water and look down to see that little coaster lying there steadily, that solid sense of satisfaction really makes an ordinary day a bit more gentle.
